The Athens Police Department is urging motorists to avoid the intersection of U.S. 72 and Mooresville Road.
A tractor-trailer jack-knifed at that location and westbound lanes are backed up, causing traffic jams on Mooresville and Pepper roads.
A minor crash reported on Pepper Road is also further hindering traffic.
