A West Limestone High School student accused of threatening to shoot a classmate one day and then bringing a gun to school the next will likely face expulsion.
Limestone County Sheriff’s Chief Investigator Stanley McNatt said the 13-year-old, whom he declined to name because he is a juvenile, had tucked a handgun in his backpack Friday, which turned out to be plastic.
McNatt said the teen told a classmate Sept. 13 he was going to bring a gun to school and shoot another classmate. The following day, the teen said he had brought the gun and instructed the classmate to feel the weapon through the fabric of his backpack, McNatt said. The classmate did so and reported the incident.
Deputy Steve Croley, the school resource officer at West Limestone, arrested the teen Friday morning, records show. He was later released to the custody of his parents.
In addition to the criminal charge, the teenager faces an expulsion hearing before the Limestone County school board. In the past, the board has expelled for one year any student who either brought a gun to school or threatened to do so.
