4 charged in string of Ala. bank robberies


MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — Four men from southwest Ala. have been charged with participating in a string of bank robberies.

Baldwin County Sheriff’ Huey Mack Jr. announced the arrests Thursday.

He said 46-year-old Lloyd Shaefer of Elberta; 46-year-old Jerald Dean Godwin of Marlow; and 27-year-old Gregory William Barber of Fairhope were taken into custody in the last week.

34-year-old Eugene Stanley Clark of Elberta was arrested Thursday night in Robertsdale.

Mack said all are accused of robbing banks in Magnolia Springs, Lillian, and in Lowndes County. The bank robberies occurred between August and December of 2007.

The four are being held in Bay Minette.
