OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) — An east Alabama judge wants an update on the status of a mental evaluation he ordered for the man charged in the March slaying of an Auburn University student.
Lee County Circuit Judge Jacob A. Walker III set a status conference for September 3.
23-year-old Courtney Lockhart of Smiths Station was charged with three counts of capital murder in the slaying of freshman Lauren Burk of Marietta, Ga. He also faces a robbery charge. Lockhart has pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
Walker also signed an order allowing authorities to obtain saliva samples from Lockhart.
A gag order in the case has been in effect since April.
