Ala. vet shot at work, clinic set ablaze

GADSDEN, Ala. (AP) — An Etowah County veterinarian who was shot and his clinic set afire in an apparent burglary was hospitalized in good condition Friday.

Dr. Jerry Handley was pulled from the burning building by law officers, and authorities were searching for two possible suspects.

Handley was working late at his Handley Animal Clinic on Thursday night when the shooting occurred. The veterinarian called his wife after being shot, and she called 911, The Gadsden Times reported.

Handley was taken by helicopter ambulance to UAB Hospital in Birmingham.
