Heading into soccer season this spring, Megan Hubbs knew a trip back to the state tournament wasn’t a guarantee for her Athens High team. Her teammates knew it, too.
If they wanted to make it back to Huntsville, they would have to earn it.
Shortly after the year began, members of the Lady Golden Eagle team sat down with head coach JB Hutchison. They made a list of 10 goals to achieve to make their fourth straight Final Four appearance.
As the season progressed, one-by-one, the list that ranged from loving your sisters to winning a state championship, were checked off. Now, Hubbs and her teammates will work to check the final one today as they host Madison County in the first round of sub-state.
“We’re going into every game to win,” Hubbs said. “But we have to be modest. We know that if we don’t play our best tomorrow (Tuesday) that we’ll be going home.”
Athens returned 12 seniors from last year’s team that went 16-5-3 after losing its first three matches. The Lady Golden Eagles eventually lost to Fort Payne in the semifinals
“We realized it was a hard loss,” Hubbs said. “We know it’s going to take all of us, from the freshmen to the seniors, to reach our final goal. Each grade is a piece of the puzzle and we have to put each one together to have a blue map.”
Game time is 6:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, across town, both East Limestone squads have prepared to host the first round of sub-state as well.
The Lady Indians, who are making their 10th postseason appearance, host Cullman at 5 p.m. Both teams tied in a match played earlier this season.
“It should be a very close game,” Lady Indians head coach Brad Carwile said. “We were out shot last time, so I think if we can make a few more and play good defense then we should be in good shape.”
Since beating Madison County several weeks back, the boys’ squad is 6-0-1 heading into their match tonight with Hartselle.
Game time is 7 p.m.
