ABS volleyball gives coach 500th win

— April Davis didn’t really think too much about notching her 500th win as a coach.

She knew she had to be getting close, but didn’t want a big deal to be made out of it.

As it turned out, it didn’t ended up that way, as the secret she had been trying to keep was let out of the bag before Athens Bible traveled to Huntsville to participate in the Randolph Tournament.

Following wins over New Hope, Whitesburg Christian, Parkway Christian and Lee last weekend, players and supporters showered her with flowers and even celebrated with cake.  And despite what the Lady Trojans coach was able to accomplish, she’s not taking any credit for it.

“I didn’t play in any of those games,” Davis said. “It’s a bigger accomplishment to the teams I’ve coached. I’ve been honored over the past 12 years to get to sit beside girls who love the game.”

On Tuesday, the Lady Trojans added to Davis’ win count as they defeated Decatur Heritage 25-17, 25-19 and 25-10 in an area match. They also defeated West Limestone 25-17, 25-15.

E.A. Shaver had 15 kills, nine assists and three aces in the victories. Makayla Melvin had 12 kills, six digs and two aces. Mallorie Coward had 22 assists, followed by Ceci Ivey with five kills. Emily Irwin had six digs and three kills, while Mallory Bauer had two kills and eight digs.

The wins improve Athens Bible to 12-4 on the season. Their next match is scheduled for Saturday morning as they participate in the Elkmont tournament.
