HANCEVILLE —
Despite its 17-point halftime lead, Tanner wasn’t about to get complacent in Wednesday night’s Class 2A regional semifinal. Greg Maclin proved that much when he scored four points in the first 18 seconds after halftime.
It was a small part of a big game for Maclin and a big win for Tanner. Maclin led the way with 18 points as Tanner beat Cold Springs 71-41.
“They wanted to slow it down and we were a little shaky at first,” Tanner head coach Chris Whitt said. “We decided to go back to our trap and the guys made it happen after that.”
From the opening tip, it was clear that Cold Springs wanted to slow down Tanner’s fast pace. The plan worked through one quarter, until Tanner went on a 12-0 run to gain a 36-19 lead before the half.
It was though Maclin couldn’t miss for the Rattlers, scoring 14 points in just 10 minutes during the first half. As a team, Tanner shot 60 percent from 3-point range in the first half.
“At first I was a little cold,” Maclin said. “Once I started running around and warmed up out there, I was on fire.”
Tanner showed off its depth in the second half as the Rattles slowly stretched the lead to 30 points in the fourth quarter. Austin Harris and Fred Rich added 12 and 10 points respectively in the paint for Tanner.
With the win, Tanner advanced to play Mars Hill Saturday at 10:40 a.m. for a chance to advance to the state final four next week.
