CLINTON, Miss. — For the first time since 1991, Mississippi College earned a postseason bid to the NCAA Division III football playoffs, helped in part by the efforts of four West Limestone High graduates.
The former Wildcat athletes are tight end Tyler McClung, quarterback Tommy Reyer, fullback Palmer Askew and wide receiver Wesley Hughes.
The Choctaws received an invitation to the 32-team playoff by receiving an automatic bid as the American Southwest Conference Champions. Mississippi College finished 7-1 in the ASC this season, tying Mary Hardin-Baylor, which also went 7-1. The Choctaws received the conferences automatic bid due to their 17-14 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor earlier in the season.
Mississippi College will face Huntingdon (10-0) on the Hawks home field in the first round of the Division III playoffs Saturday.
The Hawks have two former Limestone County athletes on their roster — Elkmont High graduates Steven Laye and David Solomon.
Huntingdon College does not belong to a Division III conference but received one of the nine at-large bids to the tournament as an independent.
Kickoff is set for noon on the campus of Huntingdon in Montgomery.
