Rattlers rally in rain

Tanner spalshes to muddy 3-0 victory over rival Red Devils

By Ashley Hargrove

ELKMONT — Friday night wasn’t pretty at Boss Hill Stadium.

Far from it.

Torrential rains hit the area moments before kickoff and continued throughout the game, leaving both Elkmont and Tanner in a difficult position to get anything going offensively.

In the end, the Red Devils came up on the short end on their rain-soaked senior night as the Rattlers held on for a 3-0 win.

“It was sloppy,” Tanner head coach Laron White said. “But it is what it is and a win is a win. We did a decent job of running. Our game plan coming in was to run the ball at them. I think we had a good game plan, but when the rain came, we had to throw all that away. Overall, I was pleased with our guys’ effort.”

After a scoreless first quarter and a half, Tanner scored with 10 seconds remaining on a 32-yard field goal by Mark Adams. Those would be the only points of the night, despite both teams threatening in the second half.

“I knew he had the leg to do it,” White said of Adams. “I wanted to run another play, but didn’t have another timeout and didn’t want to take a chance so I went on and kicked it.”

With the win, Tanner ends the regular season with a 9-1 record and plays host to Sulligent in the first round of the Class 2A state playoffs Friday. Meanwhile, Elkmont falls to 7-3 and hosts Vinemont next week.
