Lady Trojans pass first test at state volleyball tournament

Members of the Athens Bible School volleyball team couldn’t have been more excited Wednesday afternoon.

The fifth-ranked Lady Trojans defeated top-ranked Parkway Christian 3-1 (24-26, 25-15, 25-10, 25-22) in the opening round of the Class 1A state volleyball tournament at the Pelham Civic Center.

“The girls are pretty excited,” Athens Bible head coach April Davis said. “They really played with a lot of heart.”

Athena Hinkle had 40 assists for Athens Bible. Makayla Melvin had 15 kills and 15 digs. E.A. Shaver had 24 kills, while Emily Irwin had seven digs. Mallory Bauer had 22 digs.

With the win, the Lady Trojans advanced to take on fourth-ranked Gaston in the semifinals. The match was still in progress at press time Wednesday. Look for more at enewscourier.com and in Friday’s edition of The News courier.
