HANCEVILLE —
With dreams of becoming the first West Limestone girls basketball team to play in the Final 48 state tournament dwindling, the Wildcats were still slapping balls loose, battling for rebounds and diving to the floor in the fourth quarter.
But the wheels had already spun off during a third-quarter scoring spree by top-ranked Oneonta, and the gritty effort by West Limestone (24-10) couldn’t slow down a monster performance by the Redskins’ Destiney Elliott, who finished with 25 points, 20 rebounds, four assists, four blocked shots and three steals.
Oneonta used a late run in the second quarter to defeat West 53-34 during Saturday’s Northwest Regional Tournament finals in Tom Drake Coliseum at Wallace State.
Oneonta (30-4) will play at 6 p.m. Thursday in the state semifinals, with a chance to compete for the Class 4A championship March 2. West capped a season that included a return trip to the Northwest Alabama Christmas Tournament championship game, a 4A, Area 16 championship and another appearance in the regional tournament after falling 43-32 to Good Hope in the 2012 regional semifinals.
