— Sloppy first half play cost the Athens Golden Eagles Friday night as they could never establish momentum and lost 38-13 to the Hartselle Tigers at J.P. Cain Stadium.
Athens lost three of four fumbles and suffered one interception in the first two quarters. Hartselle took advantage and were up 21-0 at halftime.
Athens quarterback Stephen Rivers scored from 1-yard out in the third quarter and backup quarterback Adam Harvey passed 20 yards to Blake Crittenden in the fourth to account for the Athens points.
Rivers finished the night 9 of 15 passes for 90 yards and an interception. Senior running back Ryan Horton had 21 carries for 99 yards.
Running back Malcom Fossett led the Hartselle offense with 11 carries for 86 yards. Quarterback Will Land completed 10 passes for 86 yards.
Athens is at home Friday to host regional opponent J.O. Johnson.
Albertville 38, East Limestone 14
The momentum of a first quarter interception that led to a 7-3 lead for the East Limestone Indians disappeared under an avalanche of six turnovers in a 38-14 defeat Friday night at the hands of the Albertville Aggies.
Defensive back Jordan Gandy’s 32-yard return of the interception for a touchdown and a third quarter 15-yard scoring run by Devin Robinson proved to be East highlights for the night. Josh Appleby kicked both PATs.
The Aggies on their McCord Field home turf amassed 425 yards total offense rolling up 239 on the ground and 186 by air.
Robinson finished the night with 70 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown. He had 14 yards on two passes from quarterback Chris Harris who finished 3 of 8 passing for 50 yards and three interceptions.
East will face their first regional opponent Friday when they host Muscle Shoals.
