It’s the middle of May and Spring…specifically spring football…is in the air. High school teams across the state are winding down their spring football practices with scrimmage or intrasquad games.

While Athens, Ardmore, Tanner and West Limestone have already concluded their spring seasons, Clements, East Limestone and Elkmont still have spring games on the horizon. East Limestone will travel to North Jackson tonight while Clements will host Elkmont. Both games begin at 7 p.m.

The Class 3A county rivals will play their varsity squads for at least the first three quarters tonight. Clements is coming off a disappointing 1-9 season while Elkmont must replace nearly every starter off last year’s team that reached the second round of the playoffs.

“It’s been a good spring,” said Elkmont head coach Sean Holt. “There are a lot of new players and kids playing new positions. This games gives us one more day to look at them, see how they react to a game-like situation.”

Another pair of Limestone County teams played jamboree games against one another last Friday as Tanner left with a convincing victory over West Limestone. Tanner must also replace several key players from its state runner-up team.

“It went good,” Tanner head coach Laron White said about the team’s spring. “There was a lot of energy. We’re trying to find some depth. We found that in certain spots.”

Athens chose not to play another opponent, but did play a intrasquad last week. This will be the last time football teams are allowed to practice until Aug. 6.
