Duck and Run 5K certified

— For the first time since being established, the annual Duck and Run 5K through historic Athens will be certified when runners take to the streets Sept. 18.

Sponsored by Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful, Inc., the annual event is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., at Big Spring Memorial Park, also the finish point. Runners from as far away as Illinois are expected to participate.

Pre-registration is $15 and is going on through Sept. 11. Online registration is also available at www.keepathenslimestonebeautiful.com and www.active.com. Late and race day registration will be $20. All proceeds will support the projects and programs of Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful, Inc., a non-profit affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, Inc.

Runners may pick up packets or complete late registration from 3-7 p.m. Sept. 17 at Sweet Peppers Deli in the Publix Shopping Center. Registration the day of the race will begin at 6:30 a.m., at the park.

T-shirts are guaranteed to the first 100 registered runners. Prizes and awards will also be given to the top three runners in each age category. There are also awards for “Mid-Pack” and “Best of Limestone County,” and a cash drawing.

The Duck and Run 5K was started by Tanjie Nash Schrimsher after she fell in love with the sport of running. Since then, the fundraiser has been organized by Eric and Leigh Patterson, also avid runners.

“We are so grateful to Tanjie for taking the steps necessary to establish this race,” said Lynne Hart, executive coordinator of Keep-Athens Limestone Beautiful.  “The Pattersons have done a great job carrying on the task of growing this race.”

Race sponsors include McClary Ford, Fleet Feet Sports, Pepsi, Athens-Limestone Hospital Wellness Center, Sweet Peppers Deli, and more.

    Athens held off a late Russellville rally to win the Class 5A Area 16 championship Saturday night. Shalyne Cooper made 6-of-8 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter to seal the 52-45 win for Athens.
