Five Limestone County teams will be in action today at the Northwest Regional Tournament at Wallace State Community College in Athens. Four teams from each classification will battle for one spot at the Final Four at the BJCC in Birmingham next week.
In Class 5A, Athens boys and girls teams advanced to Wallace for the second-consecutive season. The first game of the day will feature two of the best teams in the tournament when Athens boys team kick off the 5A bracket against Parker.
Historically, Parker is one of Birmingham’s most storied basketball programs, producing players such as Eric Bledsoe. Inexplicably, this Parker team is not ranked, despite being the only team to challenge No. 1 Wenonah. The Thundering Herd lost to the state’s No. 1 team last week, 61-59, in their area championship game.
