Athens girls inch closer to fourth straight state tourney appearance

Athens High's girls' soccer team inched one step closer to earning their fourth straight state tournament appearance Tuesday night with a 3-0 win over Madison County.

Katherine Baker assisted Brooke Phillips for the first goal of the night with 37:35 remaining to play in the first half. Phillips found the net again with 33:16 to play before the half off an assist by Sarah Beth Dye. Phillips netted her third goal of the game with 1:53 remaining in the match off another assist by Dye.

The Lady Golden Eagles host Cullman at 2 p.m. Saturday for a spot in next week's state tournament.

 

East Limestone 1, Hartselle 0, OT (VB)

After a scoreless game and two overtimes, the Indians used penalty kicks to advance in the Class 5A playoffs. Michael Mingus, Daniel Dumont and Will Martin each made a penalty kick for East Limestone. 

The Indians host Cullman Saturday.

 

Cullman 2, East Limestone 1 (VG)

Cullman scored twice in the opening half to take a 2-0 lead into the break. The Lady Indians answered midway through the second half on a goal by Jordan Runion, but were unable to tie it.
