This is the last installment of The News Courier series featuring Limestone County’s top leaders on the gridiron. Players were chosen by their coaches for leadership on and off the field and in the classroom.
ARDMORE — Owen Kilmury never really thought about being a team leader growing up.
All the Ardmore High School senior wanted was for people to know who he was when the Tigers take the field.
Not only do fans know who he is because of his recent success on the gridiron, he’s also caught the attention of younger teammates.
Because of the qualities Kilmury has demonstrated on and off the field, he has been selected to The News Courier’s list of Limestone Leaders.
“I guess it’s good on Friday nights,” Kilmury said of being noticed for his leadership. “But I get mad at the coaches more than anybody because they stay on me five times as much because of it. I don’t mind though. I like the pressure.”
Kilmury added that the leadership of former Ardmore player Landon Curtis made him want to be the same type player.
“He was a senior when I was one of the babies,” Kilmury said. “He was always in the paper and the one that scored on Fridays. His number was one that everybody knew. I’ve tried to make myself known like that. I’m a little more verbal than him, but I still try to show leadership on the field too.”
With the season fast approaching, Kilmury said he’s ready to get his senior year underway.
“I’d like to have 1,000 plus yards of rushing this season and 15 touchdowns,” Kilmury said.
Kilmury and the Tigers kick off their season a week from Friday when they travel to Elkmont.
