Ardmore’s golf team advanced to the school’s first trip to the state tournament with a good showing at sub-state Monday. Ardmore shot a 338 to finish in second at Gunter’s Landing and clinch a spot at state May 14-15.
“We struggled a little bit today because they had the course set up pretty tough.” Ardmore head coach John South said. “They are so dedicated to the game, constantly wanting to improve. They didn’t shoot that well, but when we left there today, their confidence was still high.”
Lee Hodges led the way for Ardmore, shooting a 74. Hodges will make his second trip to the state tournament after qualifying as an individual last year as a freshman. Ty Beck (84), Andrew Eakes (89) and Zac Garner (91) rounded the top four for the Tigers.
Guntersville won the sub-state tournament with a 301 and Good Hope was the other team to advance with a 342. Ardmore faces a tough task in unseating three-time defending boys Class 4A champion UMS-Wright.
“We face a tough task, but we will give it our best shot and see what happens,” South said. “This could be a good learning experience for the kids because all of them will be back next year.”
Local golfers battled the rain across North Alabama Monday in sub-state tournaments, but results were not available at press time.
