Bo Jackson’s bike tour through Alabama will begin Monday, April 23 at a ceremony with Gov. Robert Bentley at the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. The former Auburn Heisman Trophy winner will kick off his charity ride with an 11 a.m. press conference.
The 300-mile trek will travel through communities devastated by the April 27, 2011, tornadoes. The ride will take place over five days and will serve as a reminder to the lasting damage caused by the storms.
Through corporate sponsorships, private donations and registrations to participate in the ride, Jackson aims to raise $1 million for the cause, which will all be contributed to the Governor’s Emergency Relief Fund.
The ride will begin in Henagar on Tuesday, April 23, and conclude in Tuscaloosa on Saturday, April 28. A limited number of spots are available to ride with Jackson each day along the route. For a $200 tax-deductible donation, you can join Jackson on this historic ride across the state. The section near Cullman is one of the few legs of the ride that still has availability.
Celebrity riders include fellow Auburn graduate and Heisman winner Cam Newton, Lance Armstrong, Cornelius Bennett, Ray Lewis and Ken Griffey Jr.
Although the ride does not come through Limestone County, funds raised will help all Alabamians. Limestone County was in the path of the EF5 twister that struck more than 700 homes here and about 300 in Madison County. A total of 78 people were killed along the 106-mile path of that one tornado.
In all, 62 tornadoes struck the state that day, including seven in Limestone County. Four people died locally, and 247 died statewide.
