CLEMENTS — For the first two quarters of Tuesday night’s game against Clements, Elkmont’s players nearly wore themselves out with a full-court press, only to trail at halftime. Elkmont head coach Garth Garris knew just what to do.

The Red Devils adjusted with a half-court press in the second half and came away with a 52-38 win to remain undefeated in Class 3A Area 15.

“Clements always plays us hard, and tonight was no different,” Garris said. “They attack the basket hard and are always a tough matchup for us.

“We wanted to have that up-tempo pace we had in the second half from the start. We made some changes in that third quarter, going to the half-court trap that led to some turnovers and easy baskets.”

The halftime adjustment resulted in a 15-0 Elkmont run during the third and fourth quarters as they pulled away for the win. The 1-3-1 half-court press frustrated Clements, which went through a six-minute scoreless stretch in the second half during Elkmont’s run.

Elkmont senior Dan Logan started the run midway through the third quarter with a long 3-pointer. Logan’s next 3-point basket with 4:22 remaining in the fourth quarter gave the Red Devils their largest lead of the game at 47-28. Logan said Garris gave the team some added motivation at halftime.

“We kind of got chewed out at halftime,” said senior Dan Logan. “Coach (Garris) really got us going again in that second half. We were more intense out there and we put more pressure on their guards.”

Hayden Huseth led Elkmont with 16 points while Skylar Gant added 10. Logan finished with nine points.

Clements took a 20-18 halftime lead when Lemac Hicks stole the ball near midcourt and sprinted to the basket for a layup as time expired in the second quarter. Hicks finished with 11 points for Clements while Devante Williams had a team-high 15 points in the loss.

With the win, Elkmont improved to 4-0 in area play and is in prime position to host the area tournament. Garris said the team can clinch the area with a win against Danville next week.

“You always want to host the area tournament,” Garris said. “It’s especially important for us this year after being tied with several teams last year and having to travel. We don’t want to do that again.”

Clements fell to 2-2 in area play and will play area-foes West Morgan and Danville next week to determine area seeding. Clements will host Tanner Friday while Elkmont travels to Ardmore.
