As Trey Grantham’s right-footed shot swished the side-netting, just outside of the reach of Hartselle’s keepers finger tips, a loud roar erupted in Athens football stadium Tuesday night.
The senior captain’s successful penalty kick in the shootout secured a 3-2 (4-2) first-round playoff win over Hartselle. After the teams were tied 2-2 in regulation, neither could break the deadlock during two five-minute overtime periods, sending the game into a shootout.
The Golden Eagles took advantage, winning 4-2 with successful penalties from Wynn Baker, Devin Hooie, Jose Soto and Grantham. Goalkeeper Dean Bunnell also made a crucial save during the shootout.
With the win, Athens advanced to play Cullman in the second round Saturday. The Golden Eagles will host the second round matchup, although a time has not been determined yet.

The Lady Eagles advanced to the second round for the sixth consecutive season with goals from Grace Morgan, Frances Conway, Keli Sneed and Klaire Phillips. See Thursday’s print edition for a full story on both of Athens playoff wins.
