The Athens State University Bass Fishing Club competed in a major FLW intercollegiate fishing tournament on Lake Seminole near Bainbridge, Ga. recently.
College competitive team fishing has become a big time sport in the last few years and this is the second year of activity for the ASU team.
Management major Victorita Bailey of Madison and secondary education major Daniel Gilchrist of Waterloo in Lauderdale County teamed up to finish 15th out of 40 entries, besting such notable programs as Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi State, Florida State, South Carolina, Central Florida, Georgia Southern, UT Chattanooga and Jacksonville State.
Lagrange College won the tournament and last years national champion, Florida, finished second.
The top 5 finishers in each tournament receive cash awards for both their club and their university. Regional competition and a national championship playoff occur after the series of open tournaments at major bass fishing lakes and rivers throughout the mid and deep South. The ASU team previously participated in a major tournament on Joe Wheeler Lake. Guntersville Lake and Pickwick Lake are other nearby national tournament spots.
Membership and participation in the Bass Fishing Club is open to all full time, degree-seeking ASU students.
Both campus and distant learning students are represented. Competitors furnish their own fishing gear but the tournament provides bass boats for each team and a guide from the pro fishing ranks. It is allowable to enter more than one 2-person team. The club takes care of overnight accommodations where appropriate and the university provides a state car and gas.
