HENAGAR, Ala. (AP) — Heisman Trophy winner Bo Jackson is starting his charity bicycle ride across Alabama for tornado relief.
The retired two-sport star begins his five-day, 300-mile "Bo Bikes Bama" ride Tuesday morning in the northeast Alabama town of Henagar. Participants will ride along country roads near where dozens of homes were destroyed and more than 30 people died in DeKalb County.
The ride winds across north Alabama before ending Saturday in Tuscaloosa. Jackson says he hopes to both raise $1 million for the governor's relief fund and increase awareness about the lingering difficulties in his home state.
Jackson grew up in Bessemer near Birmingham and played both football and baseball at Auburn University. He now lives in Illinois, but he says news of the April 27 disaster last year touched him deeply.
