Former Tide, NFL standout will speak at Boy Scout event

The Athens Boy Scouts are having a fundraiser hosted by Mayor Dan Williams and featuring guest speaker former University of Alabama and NFL football star Jeremiah Castille.

The breakfast will be at 7:30 a.m. July 16 at the Beasley Center in downtown Athens. Proceeds will support local Scouting.

Castille, 48, was born in Columbus, Ga. He was a defensive back at the University of Alabama, playing on the last team coached by the legendary Bear Bryant. Castille was a pallbearer at Bryant’s funeral on Jan. 28, 1983.

Castille was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the third round of the 1983 NFL draft. He played in six seasons in the NFL from 1983-1988 for the Buccaneers and Denver Broncos.

According to his biography, Castille felt a call from God to mentor, coach and minister to young people from the inner city and was ordained as a minister of the gospel in 2001.

Jeremiah Castille Community Development Center focuses on children ages 7 to 18 and provides a Christian environment to challenge the inner-city youth to excel and provide positive role models in their communities.

In addition to youth development, Jeremiah Castille Foundation projects and services include: Collegiate Campus Ministry, Sports Character Camps, Men of Stille, Chaplain University of Alabama Football, Jeremiah Castille Ministry, Community and Corporate Speaking and Book Bag Give-a-Way.

Jeremiah Castille Ministry provides ministerial programs for marriage, family and individual Biblical counseling, individual and group discipleship, motivational speaking forums and evangelist engagements.

Local teams set to host area tournaments
Athens basketball fans will get a double dose of postseason play beginning Thursday as the boys and girls teams are set to host area tournaments. Eddie Murphree’s girls team will start tournament play Thursday when they host Muscle Shoals at 7:30. The winner advances to the area championship Saturday at 7 p.m.
