We appreciate the efforts of our local Tourism Board, the Spirit of Athens, Art on the Square and many others who helped organize the 2010 Hometown Homecoming. The events this past Friday and Saturday were family friendly, lots of fun and, best of all, free.
The purpose of the event was to draw people home who may have been away for a while. We know several high school classes from the late 1950s and early 1960s held reunions in conjunction with this event and that dozens of old friends and family members came home for the weekend.
They must have liked what they saw: Athens and Limestone County are the same in many ways as they were 20 or even 50 year ago. This is still a small town in which people value time around the Sunday dinner table, a lunch at a meat-and-three diner, or a football game at the high school.
We are growing and prospering and we feel that is a good thing. But those helping us thrive — the groups mentioned above, along with the city of Athens, Limestone County Commission, the Limestone County Economic Development Agency and more — are doing so with thought and care to maintaining our hometown as a place people want to come home to.
Thanks for preserving our past while looking to our future.
And thanks for throwing a great party.
