John Ronald Shannon, 90, of Ardmore, Tenn., died Wednesday, June 13, 2012, at Athens-Limestone Hospital.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 16, at Ardmore Chapel Funeral Home with Alan Hughes officiating. Burial was in the Gatlin Cemetery in Ardmore with full military honors. Ardmore Chapel Funeral Home was in charge.
Pallbearers were Johnny Miller, Thomas Colston, Terry Colston, Curt Shannon, Michael Dean Smith and Colston Rife Thompson. Honorary pallbearers were Sam Hawkins and Steve Sutherland.
Born Nov. 1, 1921, in Ardmore, he was the son of the late George Shannon and the late Della Hattie Lee Jones Shannon. He was the husband of Gladys Colston Shannon. Mr. Shannon lived in Ardmore all of his life and was a member of Ardmore First Baptist Church. He was a veteran of World War II and member on the Huntsville May 29, 2010, World War II Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.
He was owner of many service stations and Shannon Used Cars in Ardmore since 1947, selling cars all over the Ardmore area. He also worked at Athens Motors for several years where he was a member of The Professional Sales Master Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Wendell Shannon and Thomas Shannon; and sister, Kathleen Shannon Smith.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys Colston Shannon of Ardmore, Tenn.; two daughters, Shana Dee Shannon Sutherland and husband Jerry L. of Harvest, and Sheila Dean Shannon and Samual M. Hawkins of Navarre, Fla.; brother, George E. “Dike” Shannon of Ardmore; grandsons, Michael Dean Smith and wife Kiyoka H. of Buffalo, N.Y., and Colston Rife Thompson and wife Aubrey of Nashville, Tenn.; great-grandchildren, Molly L. Thompson of Boston, and Andrew Colston Thompson of Nashville.
