Edna Brackeen

— Edna M. Brackeen, 93, of Athens passed away Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. Mrs. Brackeen was born May 21, 1919, in Limestone County to John Bates and Julia Griffin Bates.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home. Visitation is from 11 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery with James Fain and Marla DeLong officiating.

Edna still lived at home and was very active. She loved working in her yard and keeping house. She retired from the Athens News Courier after 32 years and was a Red Cross Volunteer for more than 20 years. She was a member of Market Street Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Julia Bates; husband, Paul Brackeen; and daughter, Paulette Jane Brackeen.

Survivors include her daughter, Sue Brackeen Holton and husband Jim of Athens; granddaughters, Connie Fain of Athens, Sandra Arnold and husband Jake of Wetumpka, and Marla DeLong and husband Keith of Knoxville, Tenn.; great-grandchildren, James Fain and Sarah Fain, both of Athens, David Fain and wife Anna of Taft, Tenn., Jordon DeLong, Griffin DeLong and Emmersyn DeLong, all of Knoxville; great-great-grandchildren, Aris Fain of Taft and Elliot Fain of Athens.

Pallbearers will be David Fain, Jake Arnold, James Fain, Jacob Arnold, Griffin DeLong and Keith DeLong. Honorary pallbearers are Nathan “Shorty” Bates, Ralph “Tooter” Bates and Jim Holton.
