Fred W. Hays

— Fred W. Hays, 81, of Athens, passed away Friday, March 1, 2013, at River City Care and Rehabilitation Center in Decatur. 

Mr. Hays was born Dec. 26, 1931, in Lawrence County to John Baines Hays and Edna Thrasher Hays. He was a member of Tanner Church of Christ. He was nicknamed “Mayor of Tanner.” He was the former director of Alabama Farmers Federation and a lifelong farmer in Tanner.

The funeral for Mr. Hays will be at 3 p.m. today at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home. Burial will be in Limestone Memorial Gardens.

Visitation is from 1 to 2:45 p.m. today at the funeral home.  

Mr. Hays was preceded in death by his parents, John Baines and Edna Thrasher Hays; brothers, Harold Hays, Lloyd Hays, Calvin Hays and John F. Hays; sisters, Jeanette Gatlin and Lorene McMeans.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Jane Hays; sons, John David “Johnny” Hays and wife Vickie, and Fred W. Hays Jr.; grandchildren, Skyler Hays and wife Haley, Landon Hays and wife Haley and Collin Hays and wife Shaina; great-grandchild, Levi Hays; and special friend of 70 years, H.L. King.

Pallbearers will be Mike Murphy, Virgil Murphy, Billy Cannon, Scott Hays, Reitzel Murphy, Joe Cannon, Kent Murphy and Boman Murphy.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Limestone County.
