Karl Hamm

— Karl Hamm, 88, of Wooley Springs Road, passed away at his daughter’s home surrounded by his loving family.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Gunther; wife and mother of his children, Hannelore; son, Jurgen; second wife, Friedl; and son-in-law, Wade Harris.

Born in Auerbach, Germany, he lost his mother at a young age, was drafted into the Army while still in his teens, sent to the Russian Front, lingering as a POW for four years, barely surviving. Not wanting to have to shoot at people, his marksmanship was such that he had his instructors hiding in foxholes. His assignment as a result was taking care of the horses.

In 2008, at the age of 84, he immigrated to the U.S., to be cared for by his daughter and enjoy the family get-togethers of his only grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a loving gentle soul who enjoyed the outdoors, dancing, playing the accordian, and gardening. He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his daughter, Margitta Harris of Toney; grandson, Gary Harris and wife Faith of Harvest; granddaughter, Meike Fisk and husband Lance of Athens; great-grandsons, Caleb and Noah Fisk, and Timothy Harris.

Survivors in Germany include a son, Rudiger Hamm; and brothers, Bruno Hamm and wife Zilla, and Friedbert Hamm and wife Heidi; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, at Ardmore Chapel Funeral Home with Mike Jerome officiating. Burial followed at Hatchett Cemetery.
