The funeral for Thomas Calvin Powers, 85, will be at 3 p.m. today at McConnell Funeral Home with Paul Clutts, Sammy Brister and Lynn Marshall officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery.
Visitation is from noon until 3 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mr. Powers passed away Friday May 18, 2012, at home.
Thomas Powers was born April 6, 1927, in Limestone County to Eldren Ross Powers and Lola Hasting Powers. He owned and operated Powers Grocery at Coffee Pot for 35 years, and C&J Quick Stop at Copeland for 20 years. He was a Limestone County School bus driver for more than 30 years, and in his early years he worked at Athens Utilities for 10 years.
Mr. Powers was a member of Concord Baptist Church where he met his loving wife of 63 years and faithfully reared his children in a Christian home. He loved his family and was so proud of each one.
He was preceded in death by his parents, beloved son and best friend Donnie Powers; sister, Wilma Hamaker; brothers, Cecil, Alton, Albert, Vernon, Oran and Max.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Mrs. Jean Zirbel Powers of Athens; one daughter, Carol Gwen Wales and husband Terry of Ardmore; a very special daughter-in-law, Felica Powers of Athens; one brother, Glenn R.C. Powers and wife Nell; four grandchildren, Kerri Langley and husband Reece of Alexandria, Va., Donna Bryant and husband Bo of Ardmore, Donnie Powers Jr. and wife Meagan of Athens, and Bethany Schumacher and husband John of Athens; five great-grandchildren, Gracie Beddingfield, Mallory Beddingfield, Merri Ellis Powers, Samuel Langley and Katie Schumacher.
Pallbearers will be Donnie Powers Jr., Reece Langley, John Schumacher, Bo Bryant, Alfred McCown, Marion Powers, Mark Powers and Steve Powers.
