The memorial service for Martha Davis Keene, 87, of Cookeville, Tenn., will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Cookeville with the Rev. Joe Weatherly officiating. Mrs. Keene chose cremation, and the inurnment will be in St. Michael’s Episcopal Church Columbarium. The family will greet friends immediately following the service in the parish hall of the church.
Mrs. Keene died Saturday, April 14, 2012, at Bethesda Health Care Center in Cookeville following an extended illness.
She was born June 23, 1924, in Athens, the only child of the late Henry Grady and Lois Kennedy Davis.
Mrs. Keene was a homemaker. She graduated from Huntingdon College in Montgomery, with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, and also received Bachelor of Arts and master’s degrees in home economics from George Peabody College in Nashville.
She was the longest standing member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, having become a member on Nov. 1, 1952. She was a former member of the Cookeville Book Lovers Club, P.E.O Chapter L, Town and Gown Club, and several bridge clubs. She loved to read, knit and play bridge.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Dr. Charles J. Keene Jr., who she married in Athens on June 12, 1946.
She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Martha Lois Keene of Hermitage, Tenn., and Grady Keene and husband Tom Chervenak of Cookeville; five grandchildren, Silas Black, Katie Hilton and husband Neal, Beth Haile (Colen Locke), Ashley Johnson and husband Thomas, and Breanne Fletcher; three great-grandchildren, Madelyn Black, McKynna Locke and Rebecca Johnson.
