George Phillips Jr., 83, of Decatur passed away Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012. He was born in Alexandra, Ind., on Feb. 18, 1929.
George had a long and successful career as an aeronautical engineer working across the country and around the world. He worked for Delco Remy, Chance Vought/LTV, and Martin Marietta before retiring in 1984 after 37 years of dedication to his field. After retirement, he and Jean enjoyed traveling around the world and playing as much golf as possible.
He was a loving and dedicated husband, father and Papaw. He loved people and never met a stranger. His contagious smile and warm and witty disposition will be truly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his faithful and loving wife Betty Jean Menefee Phillips; his two daughters, Carole Smith and Cheryl Field; five grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews, and countless friends.
He was preceded in death by his father George Phillips Sr.; his mother, Leota Juanita Phillips; a sister, Patricia Ann McConaghy; and a brother, James Glen Phillips.
Funeral services will be held at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home at 2 p.m. on Tuesday with Brother Scotty and Charles Ezell officiating.
Visitation will be held from noon to 1:45 p.m., prior to the services. Interment will be a private service at Huntsville Memory Garden.
