Jackie Gene Long

— Jackie Gene Long, 78, of Athens passed away peacefully at his residence outside of Athens on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012.

He was born Jan. 4, 1934, to parents, Hosea and Ines Long in Vanduser, Mo. Jack was raised on the family farm with brothers Bill, J.D., James Russell “J.R.,” Farris Dean, and sister Bonnie (Houke).

Jack attended and graduated from Vanduser High School. Jack was a veteran, serving one tour of duty in the Korean War and two tours of duty in the Vietnam War. He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1972.

Jack married Peggy Jenkins of Big Springs, Texas, who preceded him in death.

Jack is survived by four sons, Darrell and wife Vickie of Texarkana, Texas, Robert  and wife Pam of Gurdon, Ark., Donnie and wife Melinda of Athens, Steve and wife Myra of Athens. He had eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. today at Berryhill Funeral Home in Huntsville. A graveside service will be held at noon Friday at Valhalla Memory Gardens with Chaplain Steve Spray officiating and Berryhill Funeral Home directing.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Cancer Society, Hospice, or a charity of your choice.
