Carl Smith Jr.

— The funeral services for Carl Stewart Smith Jr., 68, of Athens will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church of Athens with the Rev. Jimmy Bassham officiating. Viewing hours will be from 1-2 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery.

Carl Stewart Smith passed on Friday, April 27, 2012, at home.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at McConnell Funeral Home.

Carl Smith Jr. was born Feb. 13, 1944, to Carl Stewart Smith Sr. and Gladys Shelton Smith in Decatur. Mr. Smith graduated from Athens High School and from St. Bernard College in Cullman, where he played basketball and received a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. He also attended Athens College and the University of Mississippi. He was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity.

He served with the Alabama Army National Guard, 142nd Signals Corps. He was an operations manager with Computer Sciences Corp. He was previously employed by Brown Engineering Company, Decatur Iron and Steel Inc., Pearce, DeMoss and King Inc., Universal Construction Co., Bryson Construction Co., Gentrac Inc., and Pinnacle Group.

He was a member of the board of directors of Athens Chamber of Commerce, Athens Rotary Club, city of Athens Industries Board, Alabama Builders and Contractors, Lions Club, Julian Newman PTO (past president), AHS Band Parent Association, Cub Scout Pack 24 (Cubmaster), Junior Achievement volunteer, alcohol board of city of Athens, North Alabama Ole Miss Alumni Club (past president).

He was a member of First United Methodist Church. He was the author of “Smith Legacy Unveiled,” a book of family genealogy.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his father, Carl Stewart Smith Sr. 

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 28 years, Lynda Ricks Smith of Athens; sons, Christopher Stewart Smith of Clarksville, Tenn., Corey Alexander Smith and Clayton Brinkley Smith, both of Athens; a daughter, Kari Delayne Smith of Nashville, Tenn.; his mother, Gladys Shelton Smith of Athens; a sister, Joyce Smith Wakham of Woodstock, Ga.; and his grandchildren, Timothy Stewart Smith, Margaret Eileen Smith and Lillian Elisabeth Smith, all of Clarksville, Tenn.

Pallbearers will be Harold Martin, Max Arnold, Mike Burson, Russ Wakeham, Alfred Griffin, Robb Collins, Ed Ricks, and Allynn Griffin.

Honorary pallbearers will be Brownie Nelson and Harry Wakham.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley in Decatur and First United Methodist Church of Athens.
