— James Granville Thornton, 91, of Athens passed away on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at his residence.  Mr. Thornton was born Dec. 15, 1920, in Limestone County to William Granville Thornton and Ola Nitchell Thornton.

Services for Mr. Thornton will be at 3 p.m. today at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 1-2:45 p.m today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery with Bill Irby and Bud White officiating. 

Mr. Thornton was a member of Northside Church of Christ, a Marine veteran of World War II and retired from Goodyear Mills.

Mr. Thornton is survived by his sons, Joe Thornton and wife Berdie, and Larry Thornton; a daughter, Sherry Brown and husband Corky; grandchildren, Tony Thornton, Tracy Fanning, Tonya Brooks, Chuck Thornton, Bryan Thornton and Leah Appleton; 13 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Correne Thornton; daughter-in-law, Sue Thornton; one great-grandson, Bradley Brooks; his parents, William and Ola Thornton, and eight brothers and sisters.

Pallbearers are Chuck Thornton, Bryan Thornton, Tony Thornton, T.J. Barnett, Ryan Tucker and Kyle Thornton. 

Honorary pallbearer is Brandon Thornton.
