Robert Cowen

— The funeral for Robert Wayne Cowen, 68, of Athens will be at 2 p.m. today at McConnell Funeral Home with Brent Hawkins officiating. Interment will be in Roselawn Cemetery.

Visitation was from 6-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mr. Cowen died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at home surrounded by his family and Pastor Brent Hawkins.

Robert Cowen was married to his loving and devoted wife Shirley for 43 years. He was a wonderful uncle to many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

He retired from TVA and enjoyed being a member of First Union Baptist Church. He loved all of his family and friends. He was a U.S. Army veteran and received a Purple Heart for his service during the Vietnam War.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leota “Sally” and Leonard Crews; brothers, Doug Crews and Jim Cowen.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Bishop Cowen of Athens; brother, William “Bud” Cowen of Lawrenceburg, Tenn.; stepsisters, Debrah Burgett and husband John, Brenda Gordon and husband Dennis, Dottie Gordon and husband Larry and Helen Delrio and husband Santos, all of Athens; and stepbrothers, Danny Crews and Frankie Crews, both of Athens.

Pallbearers are B.J. Burgett, Christopher Cowen, Jacob Goff, Daniel Gordon, Lee Gordon and Ken Griffin.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests an honorable donation in his memory to First Union Baptist Church, 18356 Edgewood Road, Athens, AL 35612, or hospice.
