Woman burned in fire at Elmwood Apartments

CNHI

— A woman who was burned over 95 percent of her body after a fire in her unit at Elmwood Apartments was taken to Athens-Limestone Hospital by ambulance at around 10:45 p.m.

Unconfirmed reports from neighbors at the scene said the fire began from a cigarette.

At about 11:30 p.m., the victim was taken by MedFlight to Huntsville Hospital. The woman’s identity is not being released because the investigation is ongoing, according to Athens Police Capt. Floyd Johnson.

According to reports from the ambulance service on the police scanner, the woman, who was in her mid-50s, received second- and third-degree burns over 95 percent of her body.

Athens Fire Department was dispatched to the scene at 10:33 p.m. and arrived at 10:38 p.m., which Johnson said helped contain the fire to the unit where the woman lived.

No other apartments were damaged.
