A joint project to improve the Tanner Crossroads intersection has received approval from both the Athens City Council and the Limestone County Commission, and can now move forward with the Alabama Department of Transportation.
The $206,000 project to improve the intersection at U.S. 31 and Huntsville-Browns Ferry Road is part of the Alabama Transportation and Rehabilitation Improvement Program, and ATRIP project bids are processed by ALDOT.
ATRIP will provide $164,800, and the city and county each will contribute 50 percent of the $41,200 local match.
The project could be let out for bid in December, and is designed to improve functionality and safety at the intersection, which has heavy industrial and school-related traffic.
