Grand jury will hear Rambo case next year

— A Limestone County grand jury will hear next year the case of a Tennessee man accused of breaking into two Athens homes in October while armed with a double-barreled shotgun.

District Attorney Brian Jones confirmed Thursday his office will present the case to a grand jury sometime next year. Jurors will decide whether there is adequate evidence to formally charge Karl Julian Rambo Jr., 23, whose address is listed as 30 Holman Road, Fayetteville, Tenn., but who says he is homeless.

He was initially charged Oct. 4 on four charges, including first- and second-degree burglary, second-degree receiving stolen property and first-degree criminal trespass.

Rambo is accused of breaking into an occupied apartment in the 1200 block of Henry Drive on Oct. 4, which was occupied at the time by Ashley Nicole Hall and her roommate Victoria Arnold’s two children, ages 3 and 4, court records show.

Athens Police were investigating a burglary on nearby Clinton Street in which a woman reported opening her garage door and finding a man armed with a long gun inside. While looking for a suspect in the Clinton Street burglary, Athens Police Capt. Anthony Pressnell happened to be passing Willowbrook Apartments on Clinton when he saw a woman run from another apartment screaming.

Apartment resident Arnold told police she had gone to the store when a man broke through a sliding glass door while armed with a long gun, court records show. Her roommate, Hall, had fled with the children and the burglar fled in the other direction after realizing the apartment was occupied, court records show.

After an extensive search that involved the Limestone County Sheriff’s Department helicopter, police were told the suspect might be hiding in an empty apartment at Willowbrook. Officers Joel Hammond and Officer Joe McClanahan were checking empty apartments for open doors and broken windows when they found the suspect, Rambo, hiding in a bedroom closet holding a shotgun.

The suspect is also wanted in Tennessee in connection with the theft of a 1992 Ford Taurus that was found in Athens. Rambo was on probation for a charge in Louisiana when he was arrested, which could result in revocation of his probation.

Rambo has remained in the Limestone County Jail since the arrest. His attorney, Dan Totten of Athens, filed a motion stating that his client waived his right to a preliminary hearing, so the case will now come before the grand jury. District Judge Jerry Batts granted Totten’s request on Oct. 29.
