County Commission OKs road projects

— The Limestone County Commission Tuesday approved the resurfacing of four roads.

In District 2, Commissioner Gerald Barksdale requested the resurfacing with plant mix of three roads. Holeada Lane will get a new surface on 480 feet at a cost of $5,300; Plum Lane will have 960 feet resurfaced at a cost of $8,100; and Cambridge Lane, $58,000.

District 4 Commissioner Bill Daws requested that 1.84 miles of Lakeside Estates Road be resurfaced at a cost of $112,000; and 1.12 miles of Curtis Road to be resurfaced at a cost of $71,000.

The road project will be funded with revenue from gasoline taxes.

In other business, the commission accepted through an agreement with the city of Huntsville to accept funds to purchase equipment in support of the Metropolitan Medical Response System. According to Athens Fire Department Chief Danny Southard, the approximately $35,000 would be used for the purchase of Hazmat-related equipment. The funding will be funneled through the Limestone County Emergency Management Agency. Huntsville Fire and Rescue is the regional Hazmat team.

“We will have the same equipment as Huntsville Hospital to de-con a patient,” said Southard.

All of Athens Fire Department firefighters will be trained in decontamination both at the scene and at Athens-Limestone Hospital, Southard said.

“We hope this will open the doors to increasing our Hazmat capabilities, open a stream of funding we’ve never had in Limestone County,” said Southard.
