Ala. man found with homemade explosives, arrested

— COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) — Police in Columbus say an Alabama man has been arrested on weapons charges after he was found with several homemade bombs and firearms.

The Ledger-Enquirer of Columbus (http://bit.ly/14UfuHm ) reports police stopped 42-year-old John Mullen of Opelika, Ala. Wednesday night and found five hand-held, homemade explosives in his car. Authorities say the bombs had fuses and contained shrapnel.

Columbus police Capt. Gil Slouchick says authorities also found a grenade, several handguns, rifles and 1,000 rounds of ammunition in Mullen's car.

Mullen is being held in the Muscogee County Jail and police say the case is under investigation. It is unclear if Mullen has a lawyer.
