Harbin home dedication set for today

— Today, Alabama’s 2001st Habitat for Humanity home will be dedicated in East Limestone County.

The new home, located on Old Banford Street off Capshaw Road, was built for Bobby Harbin and his family. The family’s home was blown away in an EF-5 tornado that, as Harbin previously told The News Courier, left he and his family with “Nothing but the clothes on our backs.”

The dedication ceremony is set for 2 p.m.

Despite losing their home in the tornadoes, members of the Harbin family have continued to put the needs of others first by helping victims of the March 2012 tornados that hit Athens and East Limestone.

“Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Harbin have been caring and gracious members of the East Limestone Community for most of their lives,” said Amanda Garlin of Habitat for Humanity Athens/Limestone County. “They have been very active in the community, working with the East Limestone school’s athletics as well as lending a helping hand to anyone in need in the community.”

Not only does the Harbin home represent a milestone for Habitat’s Alabama efforts, but it is also notable because of its energy efficiency and because its insulated concrete forms can withstand winds of 200 mph or more.

United Way and HFH Athens/Limestone County partnered to build the Harbins’ new home. A groundbreaking ceremony on the home was held in January.

“Both organizations feel honored to be a part of this project, from start to finish,” Garlin said.
