The Greater Limestone County Area Chamber of Commerce is asking its members to respond to a survey on the City Council’s recent decision to raise sales tax by 1 percent on Jan. 1.
The survey, which includes three questions and an area for comments, was emailed to members Tuesday afternoon. Deadline to respond is Friday, Nov. 2.
“As you are all aware, the Athens City Council recently voted to increase the sales tax by 1 percent beginning Jan. 1, 2013,” Chamber President Jennifer Williamson stated in an email. “As a chamber of commerce, we understand that this is an important issue effecting our business community. When the issue of the sales-tax increase went public, we do not believe there was sufficient time for the Chamber to accurately poll the membership before the City Council vote last Monday evening. As the voice of the business community, we feel it is essential to hear from our members on this issue.”
The survey asks members the following:
1. Do you favor, oppose or neither favor nor oppose the recent vote to increase the city of Athens sales tax by 1percent?
2. Overall, were you satisfied, dissatisfied or neither satisfied nor dissatisfied with the process and public notification on the issue of increasing the sales tax?
3. How will the 1percent sales tax impact your business?
4. List any additional comments.
Responses to the survey will remain anonymous, and the data collected will be presented to the City Council to provide feedback from the Chamber membership.
