BREAKING: County terminates contract of courthouse architect

— The Limestone County Commission unanimously approved terminating the contract of 2WR of Montgomery as project architect for stalled renovations to the downtown Limestone County Courthouse.

Following an executive session during Wednesday’s work session, the commission made two motions — a motion to terminate 2WR’s contract with cause, and one to authorize Chairman Stanley Menefee to continue collaborating with County Attorney Mark Maclin to finalize the termination process.

The commission approved a resolution to hire 2WR in November 2011, and the firm was formally hired in January 2012.

Menefee, who proposed last week moving the court system to the Limestone County Event Center this summer until the project has been completed, said the contract was terminated based on Article 9.4 of the architect-owner agreement signed by the county and 2WR. The article states “either party may terminate this agreement upon not less than seven days’ written notice should the other party fail substantially to perform in accordance with the terms of this agreement through no fault of the party initiating the termination.”

2WR has been paid $184,247.89 of the approximately $252,000 original contract, and the contract won’t officially end for seven business days. 2WR lead architect Mike Watson was notified by email Wednesday morning, and written notice was mailed yesterday afternoon.
