— HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — The city of Huntsville is observing the 50th anniversary of its best-known landmark and employer, NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.

Elected leaders and executives from the nation’s space agency gathered at the installation Wednesday to unveil a marker commemorating the center’s dedication by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on Sept. 8, 1960.

Located on the Army’s Redstone Arsenal, Marshall is the place where German scientists and engineers working under Wernher von Braun designed America’s first manned rockets. Their crowning achievement was the Saturn V rocket, which first landed astronauts on the moon in 1969.
