Police: Man uses pen during robbery attempt

— An Athens man was arrested Saturday night for allegedly trying to rob a gas station clerk with an ink pen.

Athens Police received a call shortly before 10 p.m. from the BP at the corner of U.S. 72 and Hine Street. The caller said a man, identified as 56-year-old Willie Sledge of 104 Judy Drive, Athens, entered the store and demanded money. When the clerk refused, Sledge got mad, allegedly grabbed an ink pen and lunged toward the clerk.

Police said Sledge then left the store on foot, and was later located on Judy Drive.

He was arrested on charges of third-degree robbery at the police department and transported to Limestone County Jail. His bond amount was set for $5,000.
