Robotics Park hosts open house

— The Alabama Robotics Technology Park in Limestone County will hold an open house Tuesday to show off its state-of-the-art facilities and to mark National Robotics Week.

The event will include school and public tours of Phase I and Phase II buildings — including demonstrations of robots in action — at 3, 4 and 5 p.m. at the park, located across U.S. 31 from Calhoun Community College.

Reservations for tours are not required but strongly advised.  Call 256-642-2600 or 256-642-2610.

The three-phased park, also known as RTP-Alabama, is a collaboration between the state, Calhoun, Alabama Industrial Development & Training and robotics-industry leaders from across the nation.

Phase I of the park is the robotics maintenance training center, a 52,000-square-foot facility housing an industry-training program staffed by technical experts from several major robotic and automation brands.

Phase II is the advanced technology research and development center, designed for use by companies developing robotic technology. It features the infrastructure to support research, development and testing of leading edge robotics for military projects, space exploration, and manufacturing processes. In addition to the 30,000-square-foot building, an added feature is the outdoor test track that provides tenants with space to field-test their robotic and unmanned prototypes.

Phase III is awaiting funding and has yet to be built.

National Robotics Week, April 7-15, recognizes robotics technology as a pillar of 21st American innovation, highlighting its growing importance in a wide variety of application areas, and emphasizes technology education.  According to its website, the annual celebration promotes the United States as a leader in robotics technology development, and works to educate the public about the importance of robotics technology in today’s society while advocating increased funding for robotic technology research and development.
