The attorney for a man accused in the kidnapping, robbery and beating of a Tanner couple is seeking a change of venue for his client’s upcoming trial.
Garry Clem, attorney for Joshua Ray Cowan, 27, of Elkmont, wants the trial moved to a location other than Limestone County due, in part, to pretrial publicity surrounding the case. Cowan and two co-defendants — Damien Lamar Mitchell and Mario Lamar Taylor, both 20 and from Athens — are accused of kidnapping, robbing and beating Shirley and Charlotte Haney in their Limestone County home on Oct. 12, 2010. They were charged with first-degree burglary, third-degree burglary, two counts of first-degree robbery, two counts of second-degree kidnapping and two counts of second-degree assault.
Circuit Judge Jimmy Woodroof Jr. will rule on Clem’s request for a change of venue.
Cowan’s trial is set for Feb. 27, Limestone County District Attorney Brian Jones said.
Trials for Mitchell and Taylor are scheduled for Feb. 13, the district attorney said.
Limestone County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Randy King has said Cowan had once done repairs at the Haney home.
