MONGOMERY, Ala. – Three North Alabama retirees were elected into high-ranking leadership positions in the Alabama Retired State Employees Association this week, including Bill Adams of Ardmore and State Rep. Mike Ball, R-Madison. Both will hold a seat on the influential 20,000-member group’s board of directors.
Adams was selected as president-elect, representing the interests of state, municipal and county retirees and employees eligible to retire.
Adams is a former member of the state Legislature representing Cherokee County and long served as speaker of the Alabama Silver-Haired Legislature, a nonpartisan model legislature of volunteers ages 60 and older who work to raise awareness of issues important to seniors.
In this role, Adams lobbied on behalf of senior issues to the governor and his staff, members of the Alabama Legislature and directors of the Area Agencies on Aging throughout the state.
“Each of these retirees have a long and storied history of providing public service to their fellow Alabamians, and that history continues with their election to these important posts,” ARSEA Executive Director Liane Kelly said. “Our association is extremely lucky to call upon their expertise as we work to ensure that the needs and concerns of state and local government retirees and employees eligible to retire across the state are met.”
Ball, who is serving his third term in the Alabama House, retired in 2003 after 25 years of government service including eight years with the state highway patrol and 17 years in the Alabama Bureau of Investigation Major Crimes Unit. He will represent ARSEA District 18 (Madison County).
As a state representative, he serves as a member of the Judiciary Committee and the Internal Affairs Committee of the Alabama House. He also presently serves as chairman of the Ethics and Campaign Finance Committee chairman and has played a key role in passing comprehensive ethics and transparency reforms in Alabama.
The third person elected, Ed Buckbee of Huntsville, will serve as vice president of the association’s Northern region. Buckbee retired in 1994 after 10 years with NASA and 26 with the U.S. Space & Rocket Center where he developed the U.S. Space Camp and Aviation Challenge programs.
